Virgin of Suyapa’s Day History
Suyapa Day, also known as the Virgin of Suyapa’s Day, is observed on February 3. A discovery illuminated a secluded Honduran village in social and political strife centuries ago. Laborer Alejandro Colindres may have found the statue on February 3, 1747. His mother sent him and an eight-year-old to work in the fields that day. Nightfall caught them on their way home, so they slept outside. A sharp item punctured Colindres’ side at night. His scrutiny revealed a battered statue underneath him. He threw it away and went back to sleep, unaware of its significance. The next morning, the statue was under him again. He placed the statue on an altar after the experience. Two decades passed with the monument in his home. Seasons passed, and his love grew.
When the young man told the story, most villagers dismissed it as a fairy tale. The statue was officially recognized in 1777. The statue is associated with many tales, notably the end of the El Salvador-Honduras football war. In subsequent years, the statue’s remarkable powers were reported across the continent. Pope Pius XI visited the town in the early 20th century and designated February 3 as Lady Suyapa Day. Hondurans now celebrate with a chapel mass.
