Hyderabad: Women representation in Telangana Assembly has dropped to 5 percent against the previous dissolved house where it was 7.5%. There were nine women representatives in the last Assembly.
After the elections results for the current Assembly were declared on December 11, a total of six women representatives managed to win this time and reached the state assembly.
Three women representatives each from Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has been elected this time. Three out of six MLAs are from tribal communities.
Last assembly Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy has been re-elected along with Rekha Naik and G Sunitha Reddy who is a tribal candidate managed to retain their seats.
Congress’s D Anusuya defeated incumbent minister Azmeera Chandulal from Scheduled Tribe reserved Mulug constituency, while B Haripriya was elected from Yellandu seat. Former Minister in unified Andhra Pradesh Assembly Sabitha Indra Reddy came also victorious.
Granddaughter of Telegu Desam Party founder NT Rama Rao, N Suhasini had also lost the election.
Congress Party had given tickets to eleven women candidates and only three managed to win. Eight candidates including former Ministers J Geetha Reddy, DK Aruna, Sunitha Laxma Reddy, and Konda Surekha lost the election.
On the other hand, the victorious TRS had only fielded four women candidates and three of them won the election. TRS is already facing the criticism for not giving fair representations to women in the previous cabinet.
