Youth Day in Cameroon 2024 (Cameroon): Youth Day is observed on February 11 throughout the ten regions of Cameroon by children and young individuals. This remembrance underscores the capacity and dedication of this emerging cohort to actively participate in the establishment of a sustainable and prosperous future.

Despite four years of conflict in the English-speaking territories, protracted periods of civil disturbance and displacement, violent extremism in the Far North Region, and a global pandemic with substantial economic ramifications, young individuals have demonstrated remarkable resilience and potential.

The History of Youth Day in Cameroon

Youths participate in parades, cultural performances, singing, and sporting competitions to observe Youth Day in Cameroon. Youth Day in Cameroon is a nationwide celebration that seeks to instill in young people a sense of national pride, community development, and responsible citizenship.

Youth Day was established by the government of West Cameroon to supplant the national day of the country, which had been observed on October 26 before reunification. Prime Minister John Ngu Foncha of West Cameroon proposed that the nation’s national day be devoted to the country’s youth, upon whom the future of the state depended, less than a year after the country gained independence by embracing French Cameroon.

It is uncertain whether the assembly contested this recommendation; however, it was subsequently executed the following year. On October 26, 1962, the inaugural “Youth and Sport” day was observed in West Cameroon. At its inception, politicians, local officials, state officials, and members of the general public in West Cameroon held the day in the highest regard.

By the conclusion of 1963, the Foncha administration had declared its intention to dedicate Plebiscite Day to the nation’s youth. As a consequence, the scheduled Youth Day event on October 26 was rescheduled to February 11. The federal government of Cameroon proclaimed the West Cameroonian festival a national holiday in 1966.

On this momentous occasion, we urge all young people, in their incredible diversity, to learn the skills necessary for future economic success and to become active participants in peacebuilding and community development.
