Congress MP Shashi Tharoor helped government draft a statement on the death sentence handed to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav in Pakistan, in a show of rare bipartisan cooperation. The statement, which may be moved as a resolution in the Lok Sabha, will be vetted by PM Modi and other parties.

This is not the first time that Tharoor has helped the NDA govt draft a statement. Being a former UN diplomat, Tharoor had lent his proficiency to draft a statement on 26/11 attacks mastermind Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi as well.

While India has always favored not to internationalize its relations with Pakistan, it is time New Delhi tells the world that tomorrow one of their citizens can face a similar fate in Pakistan, Tharoor said while speaking on the issue.

Earlier in the day, MPs of both Houses slammed Pakistan over the death sentence. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also warned Islamabad to consider bilateral ties before carrying out the sentence.

“The government strongly condemns it. All norms of law and justice were ignored. I want to assure the House that the government will do everything possible to get justice for Jadhav. He will get justice,” the union home minister Rajnath Singh.

Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge asked why the government remained hushed on the issue. “Without an invitation, you can attend a marriage, but you cannot meet him or talk to him on the issue,” Kharge said referring to PM Modi’s decision to visit Pakistan to attend marriage of Nawaz Sharif’s daughter.
