Jamia Protest: Internet blocked in Aligarh, AMU closed till January 5 amid CAA protest

Agitators resorted to arson while three buses were allegedly set on fire by protesters forcing police to use force.

All government and private schools in Okhla, Jamia, New Friends Colony, Madanpur Khadar region in South East District in Delhi to stay closed tomorrow.

A day after Jamia Millia Islamia cancelled exams and announced vacation till January 5, protest against Citizenship Act turned violent in south Delhi’s jamia Nagar on Sunday afternoon. University students defied authority’s decision and continued to protest against the amended Citizenship Act.

The protest lead by students received support from Jamia residents. Agitators resorted to arson while three buses were allegedly set on fire by protesters forcing police to use force.


Meanwhile, Delhi Traffic Police tweeted that vehicle movement was closed from Okhla Underpass to Sarita Vihar due to the demonstration.

the university had turned into a battle field on Friday following the brutal crackdown by police on the protesting students. Following the violence, the university authorities on Saturday, December 14, declared vacation till January 5.

“All exams are postponed. New dates to be announced in due course of time. Vacation declared from December 16 to January 5. University will reopen on January 6, 2020,” a senior university official was quoted by news agencies.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 seeks to grant Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Zoroastrian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.
