International Kite Day History
During its inception, kite flying was a privileged activity reserved for royalty and the affluent. However, it has since transformed into a universally accessible festival, attracting participants from Japan, Italy, the United States, Malaysia, Australia, France, and Singapore.
International Kite Day originated in India, with the city of Ahmedabad in the northern state of Gujarat being the most frequented location. The festival is referred to as Makar Sankranti in other regions of India, whereas in Hindi it is called Uttarayan.
It also serves as a celebration of the impending winter agricultural harvest and the transition from winter to summer. Attendees travel from around the globe in order to partake in the celebrations. The celebration’s associated kites symbolize the spirits of the gods awakening from their winter dormancy.
Primarily, bamboo frames are attached to lightweight, vibrant paper kites that are straightforward in design. While not limited to conventional kites, a number of them showcase Bollywood celebrities or social issues. A rice-crushed glass mixture is often employed to coat kite lines in an effort to facilitate “kite fighting.” During this festival activity, kite fliers compete to sever the strings of one another and bring their own kites down.
Acrobats exhibit their skills during the day, while illuminated banners called “tukkals” adorn the night sky. Also illuminating the night sky are pyrotechnics. Despite being an Indian festival, it is often observed in Hindu temples across the United States. Moreover, due to its inclusive nature, participation is open to all individuals.
