History of National Gardening Day

Cool Springs Press established National Gardening Day in 2018 to promote the hobby of gardening and encourage gardeners to share their expertise.

Forest gardening, a forest-based food production technique, is thought to be the world’s oldest type of gardening. In prehistoric times, jungle banks were lined with forest gardens. Ancient Egyptian drawings from circa 1500 BC provide some of the oldest evidence of individuals gardening for pleasure and artistic purposes.

Cottage gardens regained popularity during the Elizabethan period, following a fall in the Middle Ages. These typically held food and herbs, with flowers added for aesthetic purposes. Gardens eventually became more open plan and less rigid in construction, and by the mid-nineteenth century in Europe, we were beginning to see the types of gardens that we are all accustomed to.

The early gardeners in the United States were primarily harvesters. In the 17th and 18th centuries, those who were fortunate enough to own property and hence a garden would try to gain money by gathering whatever crops were available. Home gardening became a leisure activity in the 1800s, as villages expanded and mass production began. Ornamental gardens replaced edible gardens, and study into plant diseases and pests began.

Gardens have become an increasingly communal area during the last 150 years, with ways of caring for them evolving to give gardeners with a far larger body of knowledge and equipment to work with.
