Ayurveda Day 2025: The Indian government has changed the date of Ayurveda Day. The Ministry of Ayush said that from now on, Ayurveda Day will be celebrated every year on September 23rd. This is a big change because before this, Ayurveda Day was celebrated on Dhanteras, which is based on the lunar calendar. Since the lunar date changes every year, it created a lot of problems for people trying to plan events. Now with a fixed date, it will be much easier for schools, colleges, hospitals, and even other countries to join in and celebrate it properly.
The new date was announced on May 13, 2025 by the Ministry of Ayush. But before that, on March 23, 2025, the government had already shared this news through a Gazette Notification. So from 2025, the celebration will now happen on September 23rd every year.

Why the Old Date Was a Problem
Earlier, Ayurveda Day was celebrated on Dhanteras, which is the day before Diwali and also the birthday of Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda. This date is very special, but it keeps changing every year because it follows the moon calendar. Sometimes it comes in October, sometimes in November. Because of this, it became very hard for people to plan anything in advance.
Even people outside India found it confusing. For foreign universities or health organizations who wanted to take part in Ayurveda Day, it was difficult to keep up with the changing date. So the government decided that a fixed date will help everyone and make the celebration more clear and better organized.
Why September 23rd Was Chosen
The government didn’t just pick September 23rd randomly. This date is the autumnal equinox, which means day and night are almost equal on this day. In nature, it is a day of balance. And in Ayurveda, balance is very important. Ayurveda always talks about keeping balance in our body, mind, and the seasons. So choosing a day like this shows how deeply Ayurveda is connected with nature.

Also, September 23rd comes at a time when the seasons are changing. In Ayurveda, this is the right time to think about immunity, body cleansing, and how to stay healthy in the coming season. That’s why the government felt this date is not just fixed but also meaningful.
What Is the Purpose of Ayurveda Day
Ayurveda Day is not just a festival. It is a way to tell people about how useful Ayurveda is. It shows how Ayurveda can help prevent sickness, build strong immunity, and even cure small health problems without strong medicines. The government wants to make people more aware of using Ayurveda in daily life.
The Ministry of Ayush also wants young people to learn about Ayurveda and maybe choose it as a career. It wants to make Ayurveda not just a part of Indian healthcare, but a part of world healthcare. They are already doing this through things like Ayush Wellness Centres and Ayush Visas for medical tourism. These steps show that India wants to share its old medical wisdom with the whole world.

Ministry of Ayush Is Behind the Celebration
The Ministry of Ayush is the main department behind Ayurveda Day. It was formed in 2014 and it looks after Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. Since then, it has worked to promote these old medical systems inside India and also in other countries. The Ministry invites doctors, students, health workers, and wellness centres to celebrate Ayurveda Day with full energy.
