Apple Confirms Long-Term Software Support Policy

Apple Confirms Long-Term Software Support Policy: The iPhone XR, launched in 2018, is currently running iOS 17.5 and is expected to get iOS 18 soon. Apple has always been known for providing software support for its devices.

Apple has not mentioned a definite and minimum software support timeline for iPhones.

Since the UK’s PSTI (Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure) regulation came into effect, Apple has committed to a minimum of five years of security updates.

As the supply date refers to the first sale date, the Apple iPhone 15 series devices will be supported until September 2028.

Five years of software support used to be considered one of the best in the industry a couple of years ago.

Google and Samsung have recently promised to support their flagship phones for seven years, while Apple’s software policy falls short.

Therefore, Apple no longer offers the best software support in the industry.

While Apple promised five years of software support in its documents, some devices have received updates longer than that.

Apple used to support some iPhone models for more than six years. Moreover, Apple does not differentiate between flagship and mid-range offerings when it comes to security updates.

Mid-range Android devices, however, face a completely different story when it comes to security updates.

Unlike Google’s and Samsung’s flagships, which get software support for seven years, most mid-range handsets (including security patches) only get software support for two to three years.

Even so, that’s a much better scenario than Androids were a few years ago, when a variety of high profile smartphones would be abandoned midway through their product lifecycles.
