Balan K. Nair 90th Birth Anniversary: Balan K. Nair was a Malayalam actor who was born in Chemancheri, Calicut, on April 4, 1933. He established his reputation as a villain in the majority of southern films. Balan began his acting career at the Sangamam Theatre in Kozhikode at the tender age of fourteen. He was the oldest of his siblings, and both of his parents passed away when he was a child. Balan had to overcome obstacles before becoming an actor. He made his debut in 1970 with the film Nizhalattam. Throughout his career, he received numerous prestigious honors, including the National Award for Best Actor in Oppol for his portrayal of a military officer. In 1974 and 1978, Balan won the Kerala State Film Award for second best actor for his roles in the films Adhithi and Thacholi Ambu.

He was a well-known actor in the south Indian film industry, having appeared in both Tamil and Malayalam films. During his career, he produced four Tamil films and 228 films overall. Not only was he well-known for playing villains, but also for portraying heroic characters. He also served as Dev Anand’s stunt double in the 1960 film Sarhad. Before he entered the Indian film industry, he worked as a mechanic and owned a metal shop. In 1970, he was regarded as one of the most infamous antagonists in the Malayalam film industry. Meghanathan is also an actor, although he is not as well-known as his father. Balan was wed to Sarada Nair, with whom he had five children. On August 26, 2000, Balan passed away at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala due to his protracted bone cancer.

Film career

Balan K. Nair made his film debut in A. R. Murugadoss’s Nizhalattam. Vincent in 1970. Prior to acting in Malayalam films, he was Dev Anand’s stunt double in Bollywood films. He appeared in over 300 Malayalam films, predominantly as a villain. In 1974 and 1978, he won the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for his performances in Adhiti and Thacholi Ambu. In the 1981 film Oppol, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a reformed military officer.

His other popular films include Ee Naadu, Aaryan, and Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. His final film was Kadavu, in which he portrayed an oarsman under the direction of M. T. Vasudevan Nair, based on a short story by the renowned author S. K. Pottekkatt.

Personal life

Balakrishnan (Balan K.) Nair was the eldest of four children born to store owner Idakkulam Kizhakke Veettil Kuttiraman Nair and housewife Devaki Amma in the village of Chemancheri near Quilandy in 1933. His parents passed away when he was young, so he had to care for his siblings and stop attending school in eighth grade. Prior to entering the film industry, he worked as a mechanic and owned a metal workshop in Kozhikode. He began his career as an actor at the age of 14. At the time, he was affiliated with the Sangamam Theatre in Kozhikode, the Muppathunkavu troupe, the Kozhikodan drama troupes, and his own Subash Theaters troupe. Following his wedding to Sharadha, he relocated to Shoranur, Palakkad. Meghanathan, his son, is also an actor.

Balan K. Nair, age 67, passed away on August 26, 2000 from Multiple myeloma at the Sree Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
