Bank Holidays Next Week:As the calendar turns in January 2026, customers across India are being advised to plan their banking work carefully, because scheduled holidays will mean banks will remain closed on multiple days next week. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bank holiday calendar for January 2026, branches across various states and cities will observe closures.

Why Next Week Has So Many Bank Holidays?

The RBI every year releases a comprehensive holiday calendar for schedule commercial banks, considering national holidays, regional festivals and legal holidays. RBI regular practice also follows that Sundays and second and fourth Saturdays of the month are bank holidays.

Next week’s closures are a combination of:

  • Weekly offs: Sundays and Saturdays as per RBI schedule.
  • Regional festivals & state observances: Which vary by city and state and make the holiday list different across India.

While the exact holidays differ from city to city, the broad picture for banks next week includes:

Sunday & Saturday Closures

As always, all banks are closed on Sunday, a weekly mandatory holiday. Similarly, second and fourth Saturdays are also non-working days for banks nationwide, unless RBI has specified otherwise for a particular region.

Regional & Local Festival Holidays

Apart from weekends, bank branches in certain areas will observe festival-linked closures or local government holidays. The mentioned holidays can be events like Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Magh Bihu, Basant Panchami / Saraswati Puja, or Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, etc. according to the particular city. In such situations, the banks in the states concerned will be closed.

For example

The celebrations of Makar Sankranti / Pongal might cause some closures in the regions of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and others.

Similar to this, the celebrations of Basant Panchami / Saraswati Puja would impact the states of West Bengal and Odisha.
