Chapter 1606 VA Benefits 2026:The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is going to update the monthly benefit payments for the millions of veterans in the U.S. The VA adjusts the benefit levels every year by a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) according to inflation, and the increase for 2026 has been set at around 2.8%. Therefore, most veterans receiving VA benefits will automatically get an increase in their monthly checks.
Chapter 1606 VA Benefits 2026
The most common payment from the VA is disability compensation which is tax-free payment that the veterans receive given that they have a service-connected injury or illness. The amount varies according to the disability rating that ranges from 10% to 100%, and in case there are any eligible family members (like a spouse or children).

The rates for disability compensation have been increased by 2.8% for 2026 from December 1, 2025. Veterans will receive the first updated payment in January 2026.
The following is the scenario for veterans without dependents:
- 10% rating: ~$180 per month
- 30% rating: ~$552 per month
- 50% rating: ~$1,133 per month
- 70% rating: ~$1,808 per month
- 100% rating: ~$3,939 per month
Veterans that have extreme disabilities or loss of limbs or organs could qualify for Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) which allows for much larger payments, up to $11,000 or so (still tax-free), sometimes even more for the rarest cases.
Education Benefits: Chapter 1606 Explained
One benefit that most people do not understand is the Chapter 1606 Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR). It is different from disability compensation, rather it is a monthly educational allowance for the members of the Selected Reserve (National Guard or Reserve Components) who are taking part in the approved education or training programs and are eligible for that.

Safety Net for Low-Income Vets
The VA also provides pension benefits to qualifying wartime veterans who are 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled with limited income. Like disability compensation, these pension rates are also adjusted for inflation.
2026 Maximum Annual Pension Rates include figures like:
- ~$2,424 per month for a veteran qualifying at Aid and Attendance level (no dependents)
- ~$2,874 per month if a dependent is included
Additional amounts for spouses or children may push this higher
These pension benefits offer an important safety net for veterans who are not covered by disability ratings but still struggle financially.
