Less than a week after the rape and murder of a minor girl sparked widespread protests in Telangana, a similar instance erupted in Bhopal where a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped and later murdered by two men on Tuesday, April 30. Police suspect that the girl’s teenage aunt knew both the accused, and was also involved in the crime.
Various reports suggest that the incidnet took place in the evening when the girl was visiting a temple in the city’s Manubhavan Tekri area with her 16-year-old aunt. It was then that the the two accused came up to her and took the girl to an isolated area nearby to raped her, before smashing her head with stones.
The following day, her family filed a complaint with the police and both men, who lived in the same neighbourhood as the girl, were arrested, along with her aunt.
Officials with the Bhopal police told media outlets that the body of the victim was found Wednesday morning at Manuabhan in Lalghati, a small hillock which is also a popular tourist spot.
Director Inspector General (DIG) Irshad Wali has revealed that scratch marks were found on the victim’s body, adding that rape is yet to be confirmed awaiting a post mortem report.
Meanwhile, the BJP’s candidate from Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency Pragya Singh Thakur lashed out at the Congress government in the state over the incident.
Several incidents of rape have been reported in Madhya Pradesh. In fact, the state reported the highest number of rape cases in both 2016 and 2017, as per government records.
