As the BJP almost certain to win the UP election, Keshav Prasad Maurya, the state party unit chief, who represents Phulpur in the Lok Sabha, is said to be one of the top contenders for the CM post.

However, BJP yet to name Chief Ministerial candidate for the state.

The 47-year-old leader was not seen much in the public sharing stage with ‘star campaigners’ PM Narendra Modi or Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Sources said Maurya worked tirelessly to galvanise support for the BJP on the ground.

There are several factors which may work in favour of Maurya. With him the BJP may want to consolidate more support from the non-Yadav OBCs which the party has been missing since Kalyan Singh was sidelined.

However, ruling a huge state like Uttar Pradesh could prove to be a daunting task for Maurya, who lacks administrative experience.

In a remarkable turn of fortunes in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to return to power after 14 years as it is has sweept the state by winning over 300 seats.

This is the party’s best performance so far in the state, considering that this was only the second time it won with a clear majority.

The last time it crossed the 2/3rd mark was in 1991, at the height of Ram Janam Bhoomi movement, when it won 221 seats.
