Chandigarh stalking case: Vikas Barala, Ashish Kumar sent to judicial custody till 25 Aug

The key accused in Chandigarh stalking case, Vikas Barala, son of Bharatiya Janata Party’s Haryana unit president and his friend Ashish Kumar were sent to judicial custody till August 25 on Saturday. Barala and Kumar were arrested on charges of stalking and harassing Varnika Kundu, daughter of an IAS officer in Chandigarh.  The duo appeared before duty magistrate, Gaurav Datta at the Chandigarh district court on Saturday.

Police submitted application asking for their judicial remand for 14 days. The court accepted the application, thus the two will now be produced in court on 24 August.

Days after Chandigarh stalking incident, Vikas and his friend were sent to two-day police custody. Both were arrested on the charges of stalking and attempting to kidnap Varnika Kundu. Kundu is the daughter of a senior-cadre Haryana IAS officer.

The accused were produced before the court on Thursday. They were interrogated for close to three hours at the police station. Following the interrogation, a non-bailable charges under Section 365 and 511 of the IPC were added to the FIR.

Police arrested the two after examining CCTV footage. CCTV footage shows Varnika Kundu, the victim, driving on the road in a black car and the accused Vikas Barala can be seen chasing her in his black Tata Safari. The progress came hours after the police faced backlash earlier in the day after there were no CCTV footage of the occurrence.
