Choiseul Province Day 2024 (Solomon Island): Choiseul Province Day is annually observed on February 25 in the Solomon Islands. The primary aim of the observance is to commemorate the occasion on which the Choiseul Province achieved independence from the Western Province. Choiseul Province is one of the Solomon Islands’ nine municipalities. Its native inhabitants gave it the name Laura. Three islands comprise the province: Wagina, Choiseul, and Rob Roy. The day is commemorated as a public holiday through addresses, sporting competitions, and an abundance of other public activities in which the populace enthusiastically takes part.

A Day in the History of the Choiseul Province

When Choiseul Province first came under European control, the island’s native inhabitants gave it the name Lauru. On the Day of Saint Mark, 1568, when the Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira arrived in Lauru, he renamed the island San Marcos in honor of the day he first observed it. 1768 saw the renaming of the island Choiseul in honor of the French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville. In remembrance of Étienne Francois, Duc de Choiseul, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, this name change was implemented. The island became a component of the German Solomon Islands in 1881. After 1899, the British acquired Choiseul from the Germans, thereby incorporating it into the British Solomon Islands. Charles Woodford, the Resident Commissioner for the Solomon Islands, arrived at Choiseul on August 23, 1900, and raised the British flag atop the vessel.

Japanese forces partially occupied North West Choiseul during the Second World War, but in October and November 1943, U.S. Marines attacked their garrisons. The protectorate of the British Solomon Islands was reorganized into four districts following World War II: Malaita, Central, Western, and Eastern.

In 1978, the Solomon Islands were granted independence from British rule. Honiara has historically served as the capital of the nation and continues to maintain that role at present. The Choiseul Province achieved independence from the Western Province on February 25, 1995. Choiseul Province Day is observed as a tribute to this specific occurrence. Numerous public events, including sporting contests, speeches, and enthusiastic public participation, mark the day as a public holiday.
