Edward Dickinson Baker Day 2024 (US): Edward Dickinson Baker Day is observed annually on February 24 to honor Edward D. Baker, a military commander, attorney, and Civil War hero from Oregon. This day is a significant observance to honor this renowned leader, whose decades-long friendship with Abraham Lincoln earned him the same reverence for his oratory prowess as he does not recognize it as a national holiday. February 24 is designated as Baker Day in honor of Baker’s birth on that date in 1811.

The History of Edward Dickinson Baker Day

Born in England, Edward Baker migrated to the United States of America with his parents when he was a young child. His actions and subsequent records demonstrate how much Baker cherished his adoptive nation. The recently certified attorney was thriving. His involvement in part-time preaching contributed to the dissemination of his merited reputation as an accomplished orator. Additionally, he had formed a new friendship with Abraham Lincoln, with whom he maintained an exceptionally close connection despite their political and geographically distant differences. Baker not only assisted Lincoln in winning his 1860 election but also introduced him formally to “Congress” following his inaugural address.

Baker became politically active in Illinois around the time he met Abraham Lincoln, ultimately being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1837 and subsequently serving for four years in the Illinois Senate. Even though Baker and Lincoln were political adversaries, their friendship remained unaffected; Baker even maintained a prominent presence in the White House throughout Lincoln’s term.

In April 1861, when the Civil War commenced, Lincoln needed volunteers to serve. This call to action was one that Baker, who was not only anti-slavery but also devoted to his country, could not disregard. Despite holding the position of incumbent Senator for Oregon City at the time, Baker continued to extend his services. That same month, he traveled to New York to address a 100,000-person audience, securing authorization to establish a California regiment of the Union Army, of which he would later become colonel. On October 20, before he departed for war, Baker also visited Abraham Lincoln at the White House. Edward Dickinson Baker was fatally wounded the following day at the Battle of Ball’s Bluff in Virginia. The nation celebrates Edward Dickinson Baker Day in his honor.
