New Snake Species in Ethiopia: Back in the 1980s, a biologist visited Ethiopia and discovered an unusual olive-colored snake. Unfortunately, the snake didn’t survive, and the biologist preserved it as a specimen. For decades, its significance remained a mystery. Decades later, scientists Jakob Hallermann and Oliver Hawlitschek closely examined the preserved snake, along with other samples, and uncovered that it was an entirely new species of African house snake.
The species was named Boaedon broadleyi, or Broadley’s African house snake. The name pays tribute to the late Donald George Broadley, a renowned British herpetologist and curator of the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe. Broadley dedicated his career to studying African reptiles and house snakes, making this discovery a fitting acknowledgment of his contributions.

Hallermann and Hawlitschek conducted the research to better understand African house snakes, which are often misidentified due to their similar appearances. They collected DNA samples from preserved specimens housed in museums across different countries. In addition, they analyzed DNA from newly captured snakes. This extensive research revealed significant genetic differences among the Ethiopian specimens, leading to the realization that a new species had been discovered.
The findings were detailed in the peer-reviewed journal “Zootaxa.” This discovery highlights the importance of examining preserved specimens and the potential to uncover hidden biodiversity.
Physical Characteristics of Broadley’s African House Snake
Broadley’s African house snake can grow to over four feet in length. It has a striking olive-green body with a creamy underbelly. The head features two short white stripes on each side, adding to its unique appearance.
The snake is highly adaptable and thrives in diverse environments. It is commonly found in woodlands, grasslands, and even in cultivated areas near human settlements. This makes it a species capable of surviving in a variety of natural and modified habitats. It is found at elevations ranging from 2,400 feet to 9,800 feet, showcasing its adaptability.

This snake primarily feeds on rodents, making it beneficial for controlling pests in agricultural areas. However, it is opportunistic and will eat any prey it can catch. Its ability to adapt to different food sources is another factor contributing to its survival in varied habitats.
Broadley’s African house snake is now known to be widespread throughout Ethiopia. It is believed to also exist in neighboring regions, including Somaliland. This discovery has sparked interest among scientists, as it suggests that East Africa may still harbor numerous undiscovered species.
Boaedon broadleyi, the researchers also identified a second new species of house snake in Somaliland. These findings emphasize the rich biodiversity of East Africa and the importance of continued research in the region to document and understand itsunique wildlife.
