Election Commission seeks Niti Aayog VC's explanation for remarks over Congress' income support promise

Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar’s criticising remarks over Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Minimum Income Guarantee‘ promise has brought him under fire as the Election Commission of India has sent him a letter seeking an explanation for his comments.

The election body on Tuesday said that Kumar’s comments violated the poll code which prohibits officials to support the government.

Kumar had dismissed Congress’s promise of a minimum income of Rs 6,000 to the poorest 20 per cent households saying the party can “say and do anything to win elections”.

Kumar, in a series of tweets on Monday, had questioned the Congress’s Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY) announced by party chief Rahul Gandhi on the same day.

“Congress party promised Garibi Hatao in 1971, OROP in 2008, Food Security in 2013 to win elections, but couldn’t fulfill any of those. The same unfortunate fate awaits the populist and opportunistic promise of Minimum Income Guarantee (sic),” he tweeted on Monday.

In another tweet, he said, “The cost of the Minimum Income Guarantee scheme at 2% of GDP and 13% of the budget will ensure that real needs of people remain unsatisfied.”

Kumar, who has been Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog since September 1, 2017, has been asked to respond in two days.

At a press conference in Delhi on Monday, Rahul Gandhi announced that if voted to power, Congress will provide Rs 72,000 annual income support to 20 per cent families belonging to the poorest category.

The name of the proposed scheme is ‘Nyuntam Aay Yojana‘ or NYAY. The word ‘Nyay’ stands for justice in Hindi.
