A young woman in Rajasthan has proved in court that she was unlawfully married off as a minor with submitting proof from her husband’s Facebook profile.
Sushila Bishnoi appealed to annul her underage matrimony. The 19-year-old, helped by an activist, scrolled her husband’s Facebook profile until they found the smoking gun that showed their marriage happened when she was minor.
“Many of his friends had posted congratulatory messages on his Facebook page,” said Kriti Bharti, an activist. Bharti’s Sarathi Trust charity has annulled many child marriages in Rajasthan. “The court accepted the evidence and declared the marriage invalid,” she informed.
The Rajasthan court’s order comes just after Supreme Court ruled that sex with a minor wife was considered as rape.
The couple was married at a secret ceremony in Barmer in 2010. Girls married off in Rajasthan even before reaching 18 years of age and sent to live with their husbands.
