French Language Day History

The French language has its origins in Roman Vulgar Latin. During that period, France was referred to as Gaul, and the Romans conquered it in the first and second centuries BC. The Oaths of Strasbourg, the earliest extant document written in Old French, comprised a variety of dialects, one of which was Francien, a dialect prevalent in the vicinity of Paris. During the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, Middle French incorporated Latin, Greek, and Italian expressions. The Pléiade, a collective of French poets, served as a source of inspiration for the French to advance their language and literature.

The modern period of French began in the seventeenth century, and Cardinal Richelieu established the French Academy in 1635. This was done to preserve the sacredness of the language and its literature. Although the language changed in tandem with artistic movements such as realism and romanticism, it has remained largely consistent with this era.

The United Nations Department of Public Information proclaimed French Language Day an official holiday in 2010 to promote cultural diversity and multilingualism. Additionally, the day promotes the use of all six official languages of the United Nations—Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish—in an equitable manner. International Day of La Francophonie is observed on March 20, which also marks the founding anniversary of the Agency for Cultural and Technical Cooperation (ACCT), which commenced on the same date in 1970.
