BACKGROUND

George Denis Patrick Carlin was born in New York City in 1937. His mother, Mary Beary, was the daughter of Irish immigrants, and his father, Patrick John Carlin, was also of Irish descent. Carlin’s father was the advertising director of the renowned New York newspaper “The Sun.” Carlin asserts that his mother is the source of his verbal talents; she taught him to be acutely aware of the American language. When George Carlin was a child, his household was one of the few to have a television; he grew up wanting to be as funny as the men he saw on television and in the movies.

Carlin quit secondary school and joined the United States Air Force. There, he obtained employment as a radio station disc jockey. In 1959, he encountered fellow radio worker Jack Burns, with whom he formed a comedy duo. They performed on radio programmes and in venues together; they also appeared on “The Tonight Show.” The duo was moderately successful, but in 1960 Carlin decided to pursue his own career.

Enormous success in 1970:

The comedian achieved enormous success in the 1970s. Carlin changed his physical appearance and performance manner drastically. Carlin allowed his hair and beard to grow out, eschewing the traditional suit and tie in favour of T-shirts and denim. It was the tone of his performances that drew everyone’s attention. Carlin’s act adopted a sinister tone. He began making fun of American culture by bringing up political, religious, and social issues to criticise them and make people chuckle.

In 1961, Carlin wed Brenda Hosbrook; the couple had one child, Kelly Marie Carlin. Hosbrook died in 1997. A year later, in 1999, Carlin remarried to comedy writer Sally Wade. In June 2008, at age 71, the legendary comedian passed away from heart failure.
