Gmail is killing its HTML version that works like magic on slow connections

Gmail is killing its HTML version: On their PCs, the majority of Gmail users access the Standard view, but the HTML version offers numerous benefits, such as quick loading on sluggish connections.

Google has announced that the Basic HTML variant of its Gmail service will be discontinued in January 2024. It is unknown when Google made the decision to discontinue Basic HTML support, but more information can be found on this support page titled “Use the most recent version of Gmail in your browser.” “You can display Gmail in Basic HTML view on your browser until January 2024. After this date, Gmail will automatically switch to Standard view, according to Google. In addition, the company stated on its support page that if you use an unsupported browser, you can access Gmail in Basic HTML view on your computer and mobile browser until January 2024.

Over the past few years, the global average internet speed has increased significantly. This may be one of the main reasons, if not the only reason, for Google’s decision to bury the HTML view. And while the majority of Gmail users access the Standard view on their computers, the HTML version of Gmail offers a number of benefits. For example, it loads faster — almost instantaneously, looks good on any type of device — even older ones — and opens with sluggish internet connections. All these factors may not mean much today, but there are rare events when your phone is stuck with a 2G connection and you need to access your Gmail inbox.

Meanwhile, Google is adding a useful “Select all” button to Gmail on Android, allowing users to swiftly and easily clear out their inboxes. According to 9to5Google, Gmail for Android will soon display a “Select all” icon when multiple emails are selected simultaneously. This feature has been available on the web app for Gmail for quite some time, but never on mobile devices. While the name implies that this will select every email in your inbox, it is limited to 50 — the same as the web version — making it slightly less useful, but still a useful feature, according to the report.
