Hartalika Teej is a festival which is majorly celebrated in the parts of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. It is a Hindu festival which is observed by married women in India.

Married women observe fasts for their marital loss and long life of their husband. Also, young girls also fast on the day for good marriage prospects.

Hartalika Teej falls during Shukla Paksha Tritya of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. This year, it will be celebrated on September 1.

As the festival approaches, here’s looking at significance and celebration of Hartalika Teej

On this day, the women fast and pray to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for marital bliss. They stay awake throughout the night and chant hymns. Women wear sarees and apply Mehendi on their palms and feet. Married women also visit their maternal homes and seek blessings from the elders of the house.

  • The women keep ‘Nishivasar Nirjala Vrat’ and are broken only on the next day.

  • Teej Vrat is observed during the Shukla Paksha Tritiya or the third day of the waxing moon of the Hindu month of Bhadrapad.
  • The word Hartalika comes from the words “Harat” and “Aalika” which means “kidnapping of a woman friend”, the reference of which comes from a mythological story attached to the day

While Hartalika Teej is widely celebrated in North India, it is also observed in parts of South Indian states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh where it is known as Gowri Habba.
