Hartalika Teej Puja Vidhi

On the day of Haritalika Teej, women venerate clay versions of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The fast of Hartalika is observed without water. Therefore, those observing the fast should abstain from drinking water until the next sunrise. The adherents of the Hartalika Tej fast should rise early in the morning, bathe, and don clean clothing.

Place the image or statue of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on a raised platform and embellish it with flowers. In front of the deities, light a ghee diya and incense sticks and offer fruits and treats. You can also offer Lord Shiva milk, honey, and other favored offerings. Then, devotees should pray to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for their blessings on a joyful and prosperous marriage.

Sing bhajans or devotional songs during the arti portion of the puja. After the puja, listen to or read the vrat katha (story) of Hartalika Teej, which recounts Goddess Parvati’s devotion and penance to marry Lord Shiva. Distribute the prasad to family members after the puja. As part of the custom, women may remain conscious throughout the night, singing songs and bhajans.

Hartalika Teej Importance

The name ‘Hartalika’ derives from the terms ‘Harat’ and ‘Aalika’, which mean ‘abduction’ and ‘female friend’, respectively. According to the legend of Hartalika Teej, Goddess Parvati’s female friends escorted her into a dense forest so she could flee her arranged marriage to Lord Vishnu. In the northern Indian states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, women observe the Teej festival with great pomp and circumstance.
