The ‘spiritual successor’ of Prophet Mohammed, Hazrat Ali was born on the thirteenth day in the Islamic month of Rajab in 599 AD. However, as per another record, he was born in the year 601. Nonetheless, the date of his birth anniversary varies every year as per the Gregorian calendar. And hence, this year, it will be observed today.

He is also recognised as the first Imam by the Shia Muslims, therefore, known as Imam Ali’s birthday as well. Hazrat Ali is honoured with a very high regard in the Muslim community.

Hazrat Ali was born in the holiest place of Islam, Mecca, which is therefore considered to be an extremely important place among Muslims globally. He was the first male to embrace Islam as his religious path and Muhammad as the Prophet of God.

Hazrat Ali Birthday 2021: History and significance

Hazrat Ali’s birthday is celebrated on February 25, 2021. The date of Hazrat Ali’s birthday depends on the lunar calendar of the Islamic religion.

Hazrat Ali was born on the 13th day of Rajab’s Islamic month in 599 AD. Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asda were known to be his parents. He was born in their family within the precincts of the Kaaba’s holy sanctuary in Mecca (the most sacred place in Islam).

Hazrat Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad is believed to have been the first male to adopt Islam, and many believe him to be the first Muslim. He is an esteemed personality in the Islam religion who fought with Muhammad in many battles.

Hazrat Ali tied a knot with Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, and became his son-in-law when he moved to Medina.

Hazrat Ali is honoured and regarded among Muslims for his bravery, integrity, beliefs, morals, honesty and devotion to the religion of Islam. The Sunnis consider Hazrat Ali the fourth Rashidun Caliph while the Shias consider him as the first Caliph and Imam after Prophet Muhammad. The Shias and Sunnis differ in how they are hailed Hazrat Ali but both agree on the fact that he was an upright ruler and a devout Muslim.

Hazrat Ali ruled successfully till the year 661. He was given a grave injury in his head by Ibn Muljam with a poisonous sword when he was offering prayers in the Great Mosque of Kufa. He died on the 19th day of Ramadan. The injury was serious and Hazrat Ali became a martyr within two days. The Great Mosque of Kufa is located in Iraq currently.

Hazrat Ali’s birthday is celebrated in India and in places with a dominant Muslim population, as he is not confined in the text books. His birthday is an occasion of joy and happiness and is celebrated to honour the integrity and dedication of Hazrat Ali to Islam’s religion.
