Here’s how you can spot an eating disorder

Eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia are commonly suffered by teenage girls and women. About 5 per cent of males suffers from an eating disorder. They can have a negative impact on the health of a person. A fact also states that around 1,000 girls and women die each year from severe anorexia.

Research suggests that eating disorder is treated effectively if diagnosed on time and when suspected the evaluations should be done well on time by a trained therapist trained and experienced in treating an eating disorder.

Anorexia nervosa is a highly restrictive eating pattern that can result in starvation and teens are more prone to develop such disorder.

A person suffering Anorexia nervosa disorder will:

  • Not eating with family and eating in private
  • Obsession for counting calories
  • Checking weight repeatedly
  • Claiming to be fat every time
  • Obsession for exercise
  • Depressed or irritated feeling
  • Quick weight loss
  • Stop menstruating
  • Cut all sweets and snack food from their diet

 

Bulimia nervosa occurs due to eating followed by vomiting, excessive exercise or laxative abuse to control body calories.

A person suffering from Bulimia nervosa will:

  • Take a large quantity of food from the refrigerator when no one is watching
  • Spends a long time in the bathroom after meals to vomit the food.
  • Buy laxatives often
  • Teeth and gums affected due to contact with stomach acids
  • Go through excessive exercise
  • Maintain normal weight
  • Depressed or irritated feeling
