Indian Railways to manufacture 3100 more electric engines within five years. The manufacturing will be done at four major loco production centres in India including Chittaranjan, Varanasi, Dankuni and Patiala. The manufacturing includes newly installed WAG-9 three phase advanced engine production that is mostly used in goods trains.

Southern Railways has been using WAP-7 engines so far. For the first time, the new electronically advanced and more efficient engines of WAG-9 would be given to Southern Railways with production of 1460 engines. Apart from that, other 352 engines have been sanctioned to be manufactured in 2017-18. 573 engines will be manufactured in 2018-19 and 725 engines in 2019-22.

A normal electric engine runs on DC power converterd from 25kV AC from the lines, while a WAG-9 three phase loco draws single phases 25 kV AC first and then converts it to DC and runs on three phase AC. Specialty of WAG-9 is that it works on electronic brakes. Since a normal electric engine loses a lot of energy while applying brake, the energy goes back to the lines in WAG-9 engines. Moreover, 1,430 WAP-7 engines and 210 WAP-5  engines will also be produced.
