The History of Sloth Day
The day was created by the Sloth Institute of Costa Rica and the Avarios Sloth Sanctuary of Germany to raise awareness about the plight of these slow-moving, often misunderstood creatures.
Sloths are found in the rainforests of Central and South America, where they spend most of their time high up in the trees. These gentle animals are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and are active at night. Due to their sedentary lifestyle, sloths have evolved to have a very low metabolic rate, which makes them particularly vulnerable to changes in their environment.
Sloths are under threat from habitat loss due to deforestation and also from being hunted for their fur. In some areas of Central America, sloths are considered pests and are killed on sight. As a result of all these threats, sloth populations are declining rapidly.
