Jamshedpur: A student of Xavier School of Management (XLRI) found dead in suspicious circumstances inside a bathroom of Hotel Peerless Inn in Kolkata with knife injury mark on his neck.
Harsh Balani, a 24-year-old was a resident of Rajkot Gujarat and was in his second year of the course.
Police and CID are investigating the matter and CCTV footage of the hotel is being checked.
The police officials said that prima facie circumstantial evidence points the case of suicide. However, no suicide note was recovered.
“It is too early to comment. We will study all angles, including murder, will be looked into. We are awaiting the post-mortem report,” said an officer.
XLRI has issued a statement which said, “We are extremely sad to inform you about the sudden demise of one of our students-Harsh Balani in a hotel in Kolkata. Harsh was a 2nd-year Business management student. Harsh hails from Upelta, Rajkot district in Gujarat. A post-mortem is underway ascertaining the sudden cause of his untimely demise. A prayer meeting was held this evening in XLRI to condole his untimely demise.”
According to sources Harsh came to the hotel on Thursday and booked the room on the fourth floor of the hotel. He was not seen after checking in and on Friday when the hotel staff who were on their duty to clean the room tried to call him from outside, found no response. Later they managed to open the gate through the duplicate key.
The toilet gate was also closed from inside and when the hotel staff broke inside they found his body inside the bathtub. A knife was found nearby his body. The hotel management immediately informed the New Market Police Station.
Harsh’s body was taken to SSKM hospital, where the doctor confirmed his death.
The forensic expert team has reached the spot and taken a stock of the situation. They have collected the samples and the room has been sealed.
