The town panchayat elections results that were announced on Wednesday, came as a rude shock to the Bharatiya Janata Party which failed to get a majority in any of thee town panchayats of Kodagu district.

BJP managed a clean sweep in the assembly polls of Somwarpet, Virajpet, and Kushalnagar.

In somwarpet, of the 11 seats, BJP came in a close second along with JD(S), with three seats – sliding from four in the previous elections – while congress emerged as the single largest party, bagging four.

With Congress likely to stitch an alliance with the JD(S), BJP will have to remain content occupying the opposition benches.

In Virajpet, although BJP lost one seat compared to the previous election, the saffron party was the single largest, winning eight seats, with Congress-JD(S) alliance winning seven.

It was however, the Kushalnagar TP that has thrown up a surprise. Despite not having a pre-poll arrangement, the congress and the JD(S) together have won 10 seats, which could see the alliance staking claim to the power in Kushalnagar. While Congress won six seats, the JD(S) managed to garner four in the town.
