Karwa Chauth is a Hindu festival of married women as they observe nirjala fast and don’t consume food or water for the whole day. The fast is kept for the long life of their husbands and is celebrated mostly in northern states of India.
Women of marriageable age also observe the fast and these days many husbands have also started observing the fast with their wives for their well being.
On the festival, the women wear new clothes and apply mehndi on their hands. They also sing sings and narrate folk tales around the festival.
A sargi which is a pre-dawn meal is given to them by their mothers-in-law. It contains dry fruits, matthri feni, a saree, and jewelry.
Women get up early in the morning and have items for the sargi they receive. After this, they do not consume food or water during the day and only eat after seeing the moon in the evening.
On this day, the married women worship Lord Shiva and his family including Lord Ganesha and break the strict fast only after sighting and making the offerings to the moon.
