Keep Off the Grass Day 2024: Keep Off the Grass Day is observed annually on April 21. Since 2013, this holiday created by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway has been celebrated. People frequently use “Keep off the grass” signs to prevent their lawns from being trodden and to prevent trespassing. Since the Middle Ages, grass has been maintained and used for decorative and protective purposes, particularly in Europe around castles and wealthy residences. Many American households maintain lush lawns for aesthetic purposes today.

HISTORY OF KEEP OFF THE GRASS DAY

Keep Off the Grass Day was first celebrated in 2013. The holiday was created by the freelance writer Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, who specialises in devising unusual holidays. As for the phrase “Keep off the grass,” it is frequently displayed on signs posted on lawns to prevent people from trampling the grass.

The word ‘lawn’ comes from the Middle English word ‘launde,’ which alludes to a clearing in the woods. Later, the term came to encompass artificial expanses of land that resembled glades. During the Middle Ages, lawns typically surrounded castles in Britain and France. They were typically devoid of trees so that guards could have an unobstructed view of their environs and be alerted to any attacks or threats. Alternatively, lawns also referred to the village commons where sheep and cattle were allowed to graze. During the Renaissance period of the 16th century, affluent homes frequently maintained lawns, particularly in Britain and France. However, herbs such as chamomile and thyme were planted instead of grass.

In the 17th century, closely trimmed grass lawns became a fixture of affluent homes and were viewed as a status symbol. At the time, lawnmowers and other machinery had not yet been devised, so labourers and servants were responsible for cutting the grass. Because only wealthy landowners could afford to employ labourers, lawns became a symbol of affluence in England. In the 19th century, lawnmowers first appeared. Edwin Beard Budding devised the first lawnmower in Brimscombe and Thrupp, England, in the year 1830. This innovation has since become a standard piece of equipment in many households, making lawn maintenance significantly easier.
