An idol of Lord Hanuman ended up in police custody in a village in Bihar’s Vaishali district after clash between two groups of devotees.

The idol was installed by a group of devotees belonging to the Scheduled Caste at a “disputed land” belonging to Ram Janki Math at Panapur Gaurahi village under Sadar police station, TOI reported citing police. On Thursday, October 12, a set of upper-caste devotees objected to the installation of the idol on the “disputed site”.

“Two rival groups had clashed over the installation of the statue of Lord Hanuman at the village. As tension was running high in the area and it would have created law and order problem, we thought it better to take possession of the statue,” Sadar police station SHO Rohan Kumar told the daily.

The idol was then taken into custody by the Sadar police.

“Installation of any statue or temple on public land is banned as per Supreme Court ruling. Hence action was initiated and the statue of Lord Hanuman was taken into custody. It will be in the custody of Sadar police station till the issue is settled by court,” Hajipur SDPO Raghav Dayal was quoted as saying in the report. An FIR has been lodged against members of both groups.
