Navratri in Sanskrit stands for nine nights. The nine days are dedicated to nine avatars of the goddess Durga who is believed to come from heaven to stay with their devotees for the nine auspicious days. The people pray the deity with offerings of fruits, flowers, and Prasad. Early morning poojas are also performed and houses are cleaned.
Maha Navami (Mahanavami) or Durga Navami is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. It is the last day of battle between goddess Durga and demon Mahishasura.
