Moshoeshoe’s Birthday 2024 (Lesotho): Moshoeshoe Day is a Lesothoan public holiday observed on March 11 to commemorate Moshoeshoe I’s birth. Under Moshoeshoe I, the Basotho people ruled. He contributed to the formation of the Basotho people, which evolved into the contemporary nation of Lesotho.

Having been the inaugural monarch of the nation, he gained notoriety for his endeavors to establish and preserve the sovereignty of his subjects against threats from the vicinity. Due to the unknown nature of his precise date of birth, Moshoeshoe Day is observed on the anniversary of his death in 1870.

History of the Birth of Moshoshoe

Lesotho’s inaugural monarch was Morena Moshoeshoe I, who was born around 1776. He has established the sovereignty of the Basotho people and united neighboring tribes in his region of southern Africa; for these achievements, he is revered as the patriarch of the nation. The Basotho people have lived in the area that is now Lesotho since around the 5th century B.C. They have historically fragmented into distinct ethnic groups as a result of British colonialism and regional conflicts.

The Sotho nation, also known as ‘Basotholand’, was largely the result of Moshoeshoe I’s efforts to unite these factions. The nomenclature of Moshoeshoe I’s subjects as the Basotho and the designation of their territory as Lesotho did not occur until 1829.
As king in 1822, Moshoeshoe I supervised the unification of the tribes of southern Africa within his domain.

Using tribal matrimonial alliances and diplomatic strategies, he promoted social cohesion. To promote tribal unity, one of his most notable efforts to unite his people was his refusal to recognize established borders between Lesotho and the Free State (present-day South Africa). Moreover, throughout his reign, he established profound ties with the British colonizers, beseeching their safeguarding throughout the 1856 conflict with the Orange Free State. However, he would also be involved in confrontations with them.

He would adamantly oppose any attempt by the British or neighboring states to encroach on Sotho territory. In doing so, he would triumph over the Boers and enter into the Treaty of Aliwal North in 1858, an agreement that permanently reinstated Sotho sovereignty over the territory extending both sides of the Caledon River.

The British-backed Boers ultimately defeated Moshoeshoe I, and at his request, the British annexed Basotholand as a Crown Colony in 1868. Owing to his endeavors in unifying the Sotho people, he continues to be revered as a significant historical figure in Lesotho. Buried on the Thaba Bosiu plateau, where his struggle commenced, he passed away in 1870.
