National Chocolate Chip Day 2023: We may not know which came first, the chicken or the egg, but the history of chocolate chips and their namesake cookie is well-documented and may not be what you expect. Despite their ubiquity, chocolate chips are likely newer than your grandmother (they were first marketed in 1940!). In fact, they predate the chocolate chip cookie. According to legend, the chocolate chip cookie was created when a baker ran out of baker’s chocolate and substituted semi-sweet chocolate instead.
After a few years of selling their semi-sweet chocolate bars with a chopping tool (for easy chunking of the bar), Nestlé introduced chocolate “morsels” to the globe. National Chocolate Chip Day is observed on May 15 in recognition of this culinary delicacy’s long history and widespread popularity.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL CHIP DAY
There Are Chocolate Chips Everywhere!
Although they were originally created as cookie-fillings, chocolate morsels have since branched out into other applications. Whether pancakes, muffins, or ice cream sundaes, it’s difficult to conceive of a modern dessert that hasn’t been adorned with chocolate chips.
Oh, there are so many options!
The chocolate chips that eventually made their way into the classic chocolate chip cookie are made of semi-sweet chocolate, but in keeping with the times, they are now available in a variety of flavours, from white chocolate to dark chocolate to caramel, ensuring that no matter what you’re baking, there’s a place for a chip!
Big Or Small, We Will Consume Them All!
Everyone enjoys chocolate chip cookies regardless of their stature. They could be small (as long as there’s enough to have more than one! ), or they could be enormous, like Immaculate Baking’s 40,000-pound Guinness World Record-breaking cake, but regardless of size, they’re certain to attract a throng. It is fair to say that chocolate chips will always have a place on the shelf of any baker, given that they were used to break the record for the world’s largest cookie.
