National Day of Puppetry 2023: Every year on the fourth Saturday of April, which is April 22 this year, we celebrate National Day of Puppetry. This year, the holiday falls on April 22. The art of puppetry dates back centuries and is considered to be one of the first types of visual entertainment. Up until the beginning of the 20th century, puppetry was only used in the theatre; but, following that time, it began to make its way into other forms of media. Mastering the art of puppetry is challenging because puppeteers typically guard the techniques they use.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL DAY OF PUPPETRY
Eugene Lambert was a guy of conviction who had a deep love for the art of puppetry. He was the proprietor of the Lambert Puppet Theatre in Monkstown, Dublin, and is also recognised as the “father of Irish puppetry.” When he was just eight years old, he constructed his first puppet, and by the time he was a teenager, he had become an accomplished ventriloquist. A significant amount of today’s puppetry may be traced back to Lambert’s work.
Puppets were a mystery up until the turn of the 20th century. Crowds were left bewildered and entertained, but no one could explain how the puppets managed to execute so flawlessly. This began to change when a few puppeteers, most notably Tony Sarg, began divulging information about the techniques used to operate puppets and publicly disseminating knowledge about puppeteers. Because of this, the Puppeteers of America was established the next year in 1937. Puppets have maintained an unrivalled presence in the world of entertainment all the way up until the present day. They continue to be used frequently in theatrical productions, stage performances, film adaptations, and even memes.
Since 1999, the fourth Saturday in April has been set aside as the day to celebrate the United States’ National Day of Puppetry. The Puppeteers of America is the organisation that is responsible for organising and putting on the event. During one of the festivals that the Puppeteers of America put on, Carol Fijan presented the concept of a yearly celebration to a presidents’ guild. She had a daydream about a future where puppets would populate every street and bring delight to everyone through their animated antics.
