National Hanging Out Day 2023: The 19th of April is National Hanging Out Day, and we anticipate a vibrant, carnival-like celebration with various types of linens and clothing hung on clotheslines. Clothes are hung to dry in the sun and breeze in the front and back yards of the neighbourhood. It is not a fashion statement or an opportunity to show off one’s attire, but rather a way to demonstrate support for energy conservation and environmental preservation. Many people commemorate this day by draping their freshly laundered clothing in the open air.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL HANGING OUT DAY
In 1995, Project Laundry List, an environmentalist organisation based in New Hampshire and founded by Alexander Lee, created National Hanging Out Day. Lee listened to Helen Caldicott speak at a symposium at Middlebury College about the advantages of air-drying and cold-water laundering. Since then, Lee has assumed responsibility for promoting this practise, and this day, dedicated to the cause of encouraging people to abandon dryers and air-dry their clothes, is commemorated annually.
Together with numerous other organisations, Project Laundry List has sponsored National Hanging Out Day. This initiative’s primary objective is to promote social awareness and encourage you to take better care of your clothing while also protecting the environment.

Environmental Organising Semester
In 1998, while former Project Laundry List Director Alexander Lee was enrolled in the Green Corps’ Environmental Organising Semester, Vermont Senator Dick McCormack introduced the Right to Dry Bill. Thus was National Hanging Out Day established. Project Laundry List has consistently partnered with other organisations to sponsor the event up until the present day.
CLEAN, a coalition of environmental organisations, sponsors National Hanging Out Day as well. National Hanging Out Day seeks to raise public awareness about the advantages of dry lining hanging clothes outside to dry without the use of electricity and utilising solar energy instead. When you choose open-air drying over dryers for your washed garments, you will realise some cost-saving efficiencies.
