Native Americans were the first inhabitants of North Dakota a millennium ago, followed by the first Europeans who explored the region in the 18th century and engaged in trade with the indigenous people. Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Sioux, and Chippewa were the prominent nations at the time.
