National I Am In Control Day 2024: Every year on March 30, people celebrate National I’m in Charge Day. There are two reasons to remember this day. First, to tell people to take charge of their own lives. Second, on March 30, 1981, someone tried to kill the president of the United States. Alexander Haig, who was Secretary of State at the time, took charge of the situation and said the famous words, “I am in control,” during a news briefing.

This day makes us want to take back control of our lives and make smart choices about what to do next. John Hinckley shot President Reagan as he walked outside of the Washington Hilton Hotel. A gun with a 0.22 calibre was used to fire the bullet. After giving a speech at a meeting, the president was shot at six times. Attempts were also made on Secretary James Brady, Secret Service member Timothy McCarthy, and Thomas Delahanty, who were all with the president at the time.
After the attempt to kill the president, John Hinckley was caught, and President Reagan was taken to the hospital right away. Alexander Haig tried to calm the media and press at a press conference by telling them that the government was running well even though the president and vice president were not there. He said that he would make choices about the government until the vice president came back.
People thought Alexander Haig’s words were hard to understand. They thought he was going to take over and become president. Alexander Haig afterward said that he didn’t mean what he said and that he was just running the executive branch of the government until President Reagan and the vice president came back.
Since the press meeting, the room where it happened has been called the James S. Brady Press meeting Room. James Brady was one of President Reagan’s helpers, and the killing hurt him very badly.
