National Janet Day 2023: The fifth of June is annually recognised as National Janet Day. Janet’s background in the USA is quite interesting. The name, first and foremost, has roots in the nineteenth century. However, it didn’t in the top 1000 until #326 in the 20th century. The popularity of Janet quickly grew, and by 1928 she had cracked the top 100. Unsatisfied with that, sweet little Janet stayed in the top 25 names throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. After reaching its peak of fame, the name gradually lost its lustre. The turn of the century marked the beginning of a dramatic decline in use of this name amongst American parents. The name’s popularity has plummeted after the year 2000. Janet is another beloved member of the baby boomer generation who has been left to gather dust alongside Patricia, Linda, and Susan.

National Janet Day 2023: History

Janet is a short form of the English name Jane, which is the feminine version of John. The Hebrew form of John’s name, ‘Yochanan,’ means “Yahweh (God) is kind.” The name John has been and will continue to be one of the most common given names in English. The namesake of New Testament figures John the Baptist and John the Apostle have contributed to the name’s widespread adoption and use ever since the earliest days of Christianity. The birth of John the Baptist was extraordinary. God would provide his father with a son to help with the preparations for the Messiah, the angel Gabriel told him.

John the Baptist is well known for his role in Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River. John the Apostle, the other John, was a Christian fisherman and the brother of James. He is widely known as one of the four gospel authors of the New Testament. John’s gospel is the most philosophical and theological of the four canonical gospels because it treats Jesus as the “Eternal One from Heaven.” John (Russian) has many cognates, including Sean (Irish), Ian (Scottish), Giovanni (Italian), Jean (French), Juan (Spanish), Johann (German), Jan (Dutch), and Ivan (Slovak).

Following the First Crusade (1100s), Eastern Christians from the Byzantine Empire reintroduced the phrase to Western Europeans. As a result, at the end of the Middle Ages, one out of every five male English was named John. The feminine form of this name, Jane, has been one of the most common given names for girls since the 16th century. Sweet Janet was once a pet form of Jane’s name before she gained her own identity.
