The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the Tamil Nadu government’s Act permitting jallikattu, but agreed to hear a plea against the law.
The top court slammed the Tamil Nadu government for allowing people to defy its order on jallikattu and government’s failure to maintain law and order in the state.
The state was issued notice and asked to respond in six weeks.
“Tell your government that law and order is primacy in civilized society and we can’t tolerate such incidents,” the court told the lawyer representing Tamil Nadu government.
In 2014, the apex court has banned the bull taming sport citing animal cruelty. The court had upheld the order in 2016 when it dismissed the state government’s petition.
In January 2017, Tamil Nadu government had promulgated an ordinance amending the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act to hold the sport after the week-long protests by youth and students.
The peaceful pro-jallikattu protest had turned violent after the police forcefully removed thousands of protestors from Chennai’s Marina beach.
