Stampede Claims Lives Including 5-Year-Old: Police say there was a stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Bihar’s Gopalganj district that killed a five-year-old boy and two women and hurt many others.

SP Swarna Prabhat said that the event took place on Monday at the crowded pandal in the town’s Raja Dal neighbourhood. He said that people were waiting in line to get “prasad” when the child fell down. Two older women knelt down to keep him from being killed.

Police said that the wounded pandal-hoppers were taken to Sadar Hospital. They also said that there were no security guards at the pandal to control the crowds, which caused the stampede.

This is what the Gopalganj SP told ANI: “There was a stampede near the gate of Raja Dal Puja Pandal around 8:30 pm.” As people ran around wildly, they stepped on a kid who had fallen to the ground. The people pushed and trampled on three women who tried to help the child. As they were being taken to the hospital, the women gasped for air and passed out. The neighbourhood judge and a group of police officers went to the scene and took charge. It is said that a minor and two women died.

“The ensuing commotion left 13 women and the child injured. They were rushed to the Sadar Hospital. The boy and the two elderly women died. The rest were said to be out of danger,” SP Swarna Prabhat said.

In the meantime, the area around the scene of the crime has been blocked off to keep things under control, he said.
