On Thursday, the Income Tax department issued the names of five tax defaulters who owed over 10 crores to the government. This is a new strategy adopted by the government in order to shame the tax defaulters who are indebted of hefty amounts. The latest list released has five names of alleged tax defaulters from Delhi.

The total due by these five tax defaulters is Rs 10.27 crore.

In an advertisement issued in leading national dailies, the department brought out the list of defaulters of income tax and corporate tax even as it advised them to pay their “tax arrears immediately”.

In this plan of naming and shaming the tax defaulters, the government has revealed 96 such entities which have huge tax liabilities on them and have either gone non-traceable or have shown no assets for recovery.

Another reason for issuing the public list is that with details of defaulters will aware the people at large so that they can inform the department in case they have some inputs against them. The details released would include PAN card number, last known address and assessment range and defaulted amount of tax.

“The entries in the list are specific to the tax arrears and assessment year mentioned. The tax defaulter’s address, business, shareholding and management may have changed,” the notice issued by the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (New Delhi) said.
