This draft list, known formally as the Integrated Draft Electoral Roll under SIR, is a provisional record of eligible voters before the final electoral list is finalized ahead of elections. Today’s release is expected to show a significant trimming of names, with estimates suggesting more than 2.8–2.9 crore entries have been removed compared to the pre-revision voter list.

SIR and Its Impact

The Special Intensive Revision’s main goal is straightforward but very important at the same time: to make the voter list neat and correct according to the real residents who have the right to vote by getting rid of duplicates, untraceable entries, telling the dead apart, and people who have changed their place of residence to another location permanently.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls lasted for almost 52 days and had a theme of ‘Shuddh Nirvachak Namavali – Majboot Loktantra’ (Clean Electoral Roll – Strong Democracy). The state started on November 4 and concluded with a trimmed draft voter list on December 26 after two extensions.

The SIR operation started in November 2025 in Uttar Pradesh and consisted of going door-to-door to count and check millions of names and data records of every person on the electoral roll to verify their right to vote. The result, once the draft is published, provides a snapshot of who is currently on record and whose name may need to be restored or corrected.

“Starting January 1, the EC will roll out a month-long process during which any of the nearly 2.89 crore voters, 2,88,75,000 to be precise, whose names have been deleted for various reasons and want to contest the action can reapply by filling out Form 6,” Rinwa told PTI.

“Untraceable or missing voters, who also figure among the deleted, would need to show proof of (inclusion in) the 2003 SIR list or any of the ECI-prescribed documents for getting their names added to the voters’ list,” he added.

What Happens If Your Name Is Missing?

If your name does not appear on the draft list, it doesn’t mean you are entirely removed from voting forever, but it does trigger a critical action period. Once the draft is live:

Claiming Your Name or Fixing Errors

Between January 6 and February 6, 2026, voters have the chance to file claims and objections:

  • Form 6: Use this if your name is missing or if you are a new voter (turned 18 by January 1, 2026).
  • Form 7: If you want to object to someone else’s inclusion, for example if that person is deceased or ineligible.
  • Form 8: For amending information like misspelled words, wrong addresses, or other personal details.

The Election Commission will examine all the requests made during this objection window, will perform their checks, and then will come up with the final list which is at present set for March 6, 2026.

Why This Exercise Is So Important?

In any democratic setup, electoral rolls serve as the mainstay for the elections that are free and fair. The release of the draft list allows both voters and the relevant authorities to identify and correct errors beforehand. This process gives the right to the citizens to assert their involvement, and at the same time, it makes the electoral procedure open, clear, and current.
