Wadala woman duped of Rs 2.90 lakh on pretext of giving Rs 25-lakh prize for winning KBC lucky draw

The fraudster claimed to be from KBC and asked the woman to pay a processing fee and other charges to get the prize money released.

A shocking case of cybercrime has come to light where a 33-year-old woman was duped by fraudsters of Rs 2.90 lakh on the pretext of giving her a Rs 25-lakh prize for winning a lucky draw of the Kaun Banega Crorepati TV show.

According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the fraudster claimed to be from KBC and asked the woman to pay a processing fee and other charges to get the prize money released.

The report mentioned that the fraudster asked the women to pay a ‘processing fee’ to get the prize money released. The victim had to mortgage gold ornaments and also borrow money from friends and relatives to pay the fraudster.

She received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number on December 7, 2019, stating that a lucky draw competition was arranged for women on the sets of the TV serial Kaun Banega Crorepati and that she had won a prize of Rs 25 lakh.

The victim, initially, ignored the message. A fake certificate, as well as a photo of Rs 25 lakh cheque, were WhatsApped to her.

She was asked to deposit a Rs 12.5 thousand into a bank account as a processing fee. Next, she was asked to deposit Rs 30,000 as tax to get the prize money. A series of more transactions followed and she ended up paying Rs 2.90 lakh.

The woman then realised that she was duped and filed an FIR with the Wadala police.
