West Nile Virus cases, transmitted by mosquitoes, is most prevalent in the U.S. during summer, when mosquito numbers peak. While 80% of those infected show no symptoms, the virus can lead to serious neurological damage or even death in severe cases.

Due to its severity, officials at state, local, and federal levels closely monitor cases and work to prevent outbreaks. This year, 377 cases have been reported across 38 states, with 255 classified as “neuroinvasive.”

When it comes to the virus’s ability to spread, humans are considered “dead-end” hosts, which means that if an infected person is bitten by a mosquito, the disease cannot spread from that person.
