World Lupus Day is annually observed on May 10. It was intended to help us recognise that the seemingly random symptoms are the result of a chronic, debilitating autoimmune disease. Lupus continues to be a condition that is misconstrued by both the general public and medical professionals. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms frequently mimic those of other diseases. The predominant symptom is a facial rash that typically resembles butterfly wings unfolding across the cheekbones.

HISTORY OF WORLD LUPUS DAY

World Lupus Day was established by Lupus Canada in 2004 to raise awareness about the little-known disorder that can have devastating effects on sufferers and their families. It was organised by lupus organisations from thirteen countries, who urged their respective governments to increase funding for research, improve patient services, acquire more incidence rates, and raise awareness. The purpose of World Lupus Day is to raise awareness of the impact lupus has on people all over the world. The annual observance highlights the need for improved health care services, increased research and treatment for lupus, earlier care and management of lupus, and improved epidemiological data on lupus worldwide.

In patients with lupus, the immune system produces antibodies that attack healthy cells, resulting in pain, inflammation, and tissue injury. Although lupus can be fatal, there is currently no proven treatment. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people are oblivious of lupus and frequently confuse it with arthritis, a significantly less lethal disease. Many individuals are oblivious of the existence of lupus until they or someone they know is diagnosed with the disease. World Lupus Day was established to resolve this concern. The autoimmune disease lupus diminishes the immune system. Typically, the immune system produces antibodies to protect the body from these pathogens. Lupus induces the production of autoantibodies, which annihilate all benign cells. Throughout the body, these autoantibodies cause irritation, pain, and tissue damage.
