World Thyroid Day is celebrated on May 25 to increase awareness of this vital gland. Thyroid disease is the umbrella term for conditions that prevent the thyroid gland from producing an adequate level of hormones. Several health organisations, physicians, and clinics hold educational seminars and presentations to commemorate the holiday. World Thyroid Day also educates the public on the importance of the thyroid to our overall health.

HISTORY OF WORLD THYROID DAY

In 2007, members of the International Thyroid Federation proclaimed World Thyroid Day. The date was selected to commemorate the establishment of the European Thyroid Association (ETA) on May 25, 1965. The ETA was the founding organisation of World Thyroid Day. In 2010, the American Thyroid Association (ATA) recognised World Thyroid Day. The initiative is supported by international organisations such as the Chinese Society of Nuclear Medicine (C.S.N.M. ), the Chinese Society of Endocrinology (C.S.E. ), and the Asia and Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA).

The thyroid gland is a small gland located close to the base of the neck. This organ produces two hormones: thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Despite being a minor gland, the thyroid has a significant impact on one’s health. The main objective of the thyroid is to maintain the rate of metabolism in the body. The majority of individuals equate metabolism with caloric expenditure efficiency. However, the metabolism affects the body’s temperature and heart rate. When you have a thyroid disorder, your metabolic rate is altered.

Thyroid disorders may cause inadequate or excessive production of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces insufficient amounts of these hormones. This condition typically manifests when the thyroid is inflamed or when there is an iodine deficiency. Iodine is a mineral required for the formation of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism can also be induced by the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. If left untreated, hypothyroidism can result in mental fog, hair loss, gallstones, constipation, a slow metabolism, bloating, heartburn, high blood pressure, and dry skin.

Those who suspect they have a thyroid condition, especially those with a family history, should consult a physician. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are treatable in a variety of ways.
